Our tastes tend towards antiques and vintage furniture, rather than contemporary pieces, which inspire us and lead us to search for and source high-quality antique and vintage items to not only use in our design projects but to also sell to the trade and to the public.
At Nicholas Haslam Ltd, we stock a large array of unique and vintage items that have been sourced from all over the world. Here you will a carefully curated collection of pieces dating from the 17th to 20th century. A unanimous theme is a hope that the future will view this era as a time of quality, carefully considered materials, and finely crafted furniture as consumers realise the value of well-made furniture/items which can be passed down through generations.
We love to juxtapose styles and eras when designing interiors for our own clients. Perfection in architecture is beautiful but in interior design, it can be very sterile and lack personality. What we like in interiors is some order with an unexpected twist. We try to avoid rooms that look staged and are always an element of surprise and humour. That is the challenge for us as designers. We don’t want to create pretty stages; we want houses that reflect the essence of our clients.
The maxim that good pieces will work together is true also for furniture, you can put together an eighteenth-century commode alongside two 1950s armchairs, and it will look great if each item has integrity. We are always looking for unique and special objects to add to our collection.
Adding antiques to your decor can give character to your space. Antiques and Vintage carry history and can make a pleasant change compared to modern pieces. They are often aesthetically crafted with attractive details to keep the room beautifully fresh, adding contrast, depth, and ultimately creating balance.
Every home requires sufficient storage to keep belongings safe and clutter to a minimum. Whilst there are many modern and practical solutions available, antique chests and cabinets are a stylish alternative
Many of our Antique & Vintage seating options and tables can provide you with much more than just a comfortable place to sit and relax. They can create a beautiful and stylish focal point for a room whilst providing a distinctive classic design and an interesting story behind them.
Antiques allow for a room to not feel too strict and sometimes one strong statement piece is all you need. However, it is important to establish and understand your display plan to allow negative space between statement pieces so that they can shine on their own merits.
Repurposing antique furnishings are a great way to serve both form and function. These one-of-a-kind designs are guaranteed to spark interest and generate conversation with your space. For example, an antique bookshelf can be doubled up into a private cocktail bar and leave a thought-provoking impression at a dinner party.
Antiques are not usually suited for everyday use so it’s important to understand the scope of the antique item. Re-upholstering antique furniture with new fabrics can breath new life and create the perfect balance between new and old.
Create a room that’s individual and multilayered through both contemporary and vintage pieces. Mixing old and new is an exciting way to give an antique extended life in a new and interesting way. Combine or group items by period or look rather than those that look simply interesting and a ‘bit different’.
We all have our own idiosyncrasies and where better to express these than in our own homes and private spaces. We urge you to develop your own handwriting and stay true to what motivates you stylistically. Trends are for copycats!
